How to Read a Nootropic Label Without Being Fooled: A Citicoline Case Study

If you are comparing cognitive supplements, you will run into the same problem within the first two products: the labels are designed to be difficult to compare. This guide walks through how to read one properly, using citicoline — one of the better-researched ingredients in the category — as a worked example. By the end you will be able to apply the same three checks to any product on any shelf.

Check one: is the dose disclosed at all?

Open two competing products and look for the ingredient quantities. On a large share of nootropic labels you will not find them. Instead you will find a "proprietary blend" — a combined weight for several ingredients grouped together, with no breakdown of how much of each is inside.

This is the single most important thing to understand about the category. A proprietary blend is not primarily protecting a secret recipe. It is preventing you from checking the dose against the research. And as you are about to see, the dose is the entire question.

Citicoline makes this concrete. In the human trials, the dose that appears again and again is 500 mg per day. A product listing "citicoline" inside a 400 mg proprietary blend that also contains four other ingredients cannot possibly be delivering a researched dose of any of them — the arithmetic rules it out. But you would only know that if the number were printed. When it is hidden, the comparison is impossible by design.

Check two: does the dose match the research?

Say you have found a product that does disclose its doses. Good — now you can do the check that actually matters.

For citicoline, the most-cited human research clusters around 500 mg daily over roughly twelve weeks. One randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial enrolled 148 healthy adults aged 35 to 75 who reported poor sustained attention, gave them either 500 mg of a branded citicoline or placebo for twelve weeks, and measured attention and processing speed with a computerised assessment battery. That is the shape of a serious trial: randomised, blinded, placebo-controlled, a real duration, a defined population, and a specific dose.

Now compare. If a product contains 100 mg of citicoline, it is a fifth of the researched amount. That is not a subtle difference — it is the difference between a product built around the evidence and one using the ingredient name as decoration. This is why disclosed doses matter: they let you check whether you are buying the thing that was studied or merely the word that was studied.

Check three: separate "studied" from "proven"

Here is where most buyer's guides stop, and where the honest ones keep going.

Citicoline is well studied. It does not follow that it is a settled, proven cognitive enhancer — and the most important evidence on this point is one that supplement marketing almost never mentions.

In 2024 the European Food Safety Authority evaluated a proposed health claim linking citicoline to memory support. This is the formal European process for deciding whether a claim can legally be made. The panel reviewed the human evidence and did not authorise the claim. Their reasoning was specific: among healthy participants, only one randomised controlled trial had shown a beneficial effect on episodic memory at 500 mg per day, and that result was not replicated in another study using a higher dose, nor supported by the dementia-patient data. One positive trial, not consistently reproduced, is not enough to authorise a claim.

Sit with what that means. Citicoline is among the strongest cases in the entire nootropic category, and even it does not clear the European regulatory bar for a memory claim. That should reframe how you read every other ingredient's marketing. If the best-evidenced compound in the field cannot legally be said to "support memory" in the EU, then any product confidently promising you memory benefits from a less-studied ingredient is telling you something the regulator would not let it print — and you should ask why.

Putting the three checks together

So the process, on any label:

First, is the dose disclosed? If it is hidden inside a proprietary blend, you cannot evaluate the product at all. Stop there.

Second, does the disclosed dose match the human research? Look up the ingredient, find the dose used in the trials, and compare. An underdosed ingredient is the ingredient name without the substance behind it.

Third, is the claim honest about the state of the evidence? A product describing how an ingredient works mechanistically, and pointing you to the research, is being straight with you. A product promising guaranteed cognitive outcomes is either overreading the science or betting you will not check it against a body like EFSA.
